Favorite Venue to Perform I really loved Euclid Tavern and was sad when it closed.
The Best Kept Secret in the City Cilantro’s tacos. It’s everything.
Favorite Quote “Our tears prepare the ground for our growth”
Biggest Inspiration Largely inspired by a lot of lyric writers I love the process of songwriting . Joe Strummer from The Clash, Van Hunt, Corinne Bailey Rae & Britt Daniel from Spoon are some of my favorites. I admire how they tell stories, the relatability of their songs, the words they choose etc..
Tell us about how this project got started?
I’ve wanted to be in a band for a long time. I started performing under “ The Katy ” in 2014, in Greensboro, NC with friends I’d met there. I had been moving in & out of state for college & vocational things that all fell through. I moved to Greensboro, NC from Cleveland for a job & when it fell through, I had to move back to Cleveland to live with my family & I had to find a new band. It was a sad time. 2016, I started playing out again as The Katy in Cleveland, solo with the intention of finding bandmates & playing with other musicians when I could. I finally started playing with Ashanti & Eli together that summer & instantly knew we could do some cool things. Come a long way.
What would you consider your Best Local Show Experience?
We had an epic show with Fresh Produce and Uptown Buddha at Happy Dog. It was such a hang & The crowd was packed & so live the whole night. Both groups I just love watching, so it was unforgettable all around.
Craziest memory from touring?
When I was in high school My brother Evan & I were huge fans of Grammy Award Winning Artist, Van Hunt. I first saw him live at Beachland Ballroom I think in 2012! In 2019, We got to open for him for a bunch of dates on his tour. Meeting him for the first time in New York was surreal. Tour was so fun. Visiting Montreal was on my bucket list & we happened to open for him there too. A few goals unfolding all at once!
What has your recording experience been like?
It’s been a journey, when we started recording this album, Van Hunt was on his way to Cleveland to be with us & I had just realized I caught the flu from work the night of. Ended up being pretty sick, but honestly getting through it made it better somehow. I wore a mask in Jan 20’ before we knew covid 19 had spread here! I really didn’t wanna get the boys sick. I’m glad I didn’t. We showed our true colors in this recording. We each put a lot into this, got out of our comfort zones. We ended up mixing some ourselves through the start of the pandemic, then getting a lot of them remixed with L.A based Engineer, Pete Min. I think this upcoming album reflects a lot of the spirit we had coming off tour & things going on at the time, globally & as a band.
